A Great First Week!

What a full week!  We have begun to review letters and letter sounds, one letter a day! This week we reviewed letters b,m,r, and s.  Some of us remembered the Jolly Phonics songs that accompany each letter sound!  We began to learn one of the many literacy centers students will participate in this year–“Read-to-Self.”  We will be working on our stamina this year so that we can hopefully read independently and quietly for 15 minutes by the end of the year.  We also started to learn our first word family of the year: the “at” word family.

In numeracy we continued to learn about patterns.  We will learn to copy, extend, and translate given patterns or patterns we create ourselves while engaging in hands-on activities!

In health we are still learning about our unique selves.  Please complete the “All About Me” sheet as we will be sharing these with our classmates this week.image image image image image

In social studies we are learning about rules and responsibilities that we have at home, at school, and in our community.  Have a discussion with your child about the many rules (things we have to do to stay safe and to learn) and responsibilities (jobs we have in order to help others)  that they have at home and their community.

On top of all this learning we had our first fire drill! The students were really great and remembered to walk, wear indoor shoes, and not panic!  NOTE: please make sure your child has indoor shoes as they need them not only for gym, but for fire drills throughout the year!

Tomorrow is the start of our first full week! I hope you all had a chance to rest and get ready for another great week in grade one 😃

Our first few days…

image image image imageThe first two days of grade one were great! First, we discussed our worries and thoughts about starting grade one after reading “First Day Jitters.”  We got to know each other through games and discussions, we went over classroom rules and expectations (a theme we will be working on over the next few weeks),  and learned about Bucket Filling!  Filling someone’s bucket means you say nice words or do nice things for others.  We learned that by filling other people’s buckets, you are actually filling your own bucket, too!  Ask your child to explain bucket filling and bucket dipping.

We also explored our classroom library and learned how to properly “read to self” with our classroom stuffies.

This week in literacy, we will be starting our Popcorn Word sight word program.  There is information about this on a note that will be sent home tomorrow (Tuesday).  We will also be starting our word family study and reviewing letter names and sounds through activities and printing.  In numeracy we will be starting our patterning unit.  In health we are going to continue with an All About Me unit.  I will be sending home a sheet that students will complete with their parents and bring back as soon as possible to school so that we can talk about our similarities and differences.  Students are required to do their own drawings and labeling (with assistance if necessary).   In social studies we are going to explore more in depth the difference between rules and responsibilities that we have at school, at home, and in our community.

Welcome back!

Welcome to our grade one class blog!  On this blog you will find pictures and comments from the classroom which will allow you to follow us on our learning adventures.  I will also post pertinent information about upcoming classroom or school activities and important dates.

Thank you for visiting! Please check back often.
